How to resolve the “An unexpected error occurred. Please try again” message that appears when integrating or reauthorizing the Facebook Connect integration’s legacy app.

Symptoms

  • Authentication errors when integrating Facebook Connect for the first time.
  • Reauthorization errors when reconnecting an existing Facebook Connect integration.

Applies to

Facebook Connect Integration.

Cause

This error is most often caused by insufficient permission levels associated with the Facebook user account being authenticated. Facebook’s legacy app requires the authenticated account to have both user-level access to the relevant Facebook ad account and admin-level access to the associated Business Manager account. If either of those permission levels is missing, Facebook can reject the authentication or reauthorization request and Invoca surfaces this generic error.

Resolution

Invoca recommends using the newer Facebook Conversions API integration instead of the legacy Facebook Connect app, since it doesn’t depend on this permission structure and is less prone to this error. If you need to keep using the legacy Facebook Connect app, confirm that the Facebook account you’re authenticating with has:
  1. User-level access to the ad account you’re connecting.
  2. Admin-level access to the Business Manager account that owns that ad account.
You can check and adjust both of these permission levels in Facebook Business Manager’s own settings. If you don’t manage Facebook Business Manager for your organization, work with whoever does to confirm or grant the access levels above before retrying the integration or reauthorization.
