Most accounts only need one Invoca Tag. This FAQ covers common scenarios that seem to call for a new Tag, along with an alternative to try first.
Your Invoca account comes with one Invoca Tag already created and ready to deploy. While you can create as many Tags as you want, most organizations only need one. A single Tag can be deployed on as many landing pages as needed, even across several domains — Invoca silos the data collected per domain, so tracking stays easy. Using fewer Tags makes it easier to deploy Invoca consistently, keep your Invoca reports consistent, and troubleshoot errors. Below are four common scenarios that sometimes lead to creating an additional Tag unnecessarily, along with an alternative to try first. If none of these alternatives fit your business needs, creating a new Tag is still an option.

Scenario 1: I want to change my Tag settings

You don’t need a new Tag just to update which numbers your Tag swaps, the Marketing Data it collects, or its custom code. Alternative: Create a new revision of your existing Tag instead. This avoids redeploying to every landing page, and the Tag Wizard keeps a full history of every revision, so you can revert if needed.

Scenario 2: I want to test new revisions before pushing them live

Alternative: Deploy the same Tag to your staging site as your production site. Make your changes, save the revision, but don’t set it live yet — instead, click Test in the Tag Wizard. In the Test your Revision window, enter your staging site’s URL. The “Link to test this revision” line shows that URL with ?invoca_rev=draft appended — this forces the page to use your most recent draft. Click Test in new tab to preview it. To view the live revision instead, replace that slug with ?invoca_rev=live, so you can toggle back and forth. Once everything looks right, set the draft live, or make further changes and retest.

Scenario 3: I want to swap a different set of numbers on different landing pages

Alternative: First, try Replace any detected numbers, which scans your pages and swaps whatever it finds — you can still exclude specific numbers from that. If that doesn’t work, try Replace specific numbers and list every number across all your deployed pages; Invoca only replaces the numbers present on each given page. The one case that does require a separate Tag per landing page: the same phone number appears on more than one page, but you only want it swapped on some of those pages and not others.

Scenario 4: I want to collect different Marketing Data fields on different landing pages

Marketing Data collection and attribution settings apply the same way across every page a Tag is deployed on. If you need genuinely different fields on different pages, you may need a second Tag. Keep in mind that collecting different fields across pages can create inconsistencies in your reports — calls missing a given field will show blank values for it, making it harder to spot errors or distinguish those calls from overflow calls. Where possible, try to collect the same Marketing Data everywhere before creating another Tag.
