The search bar is built to make it easy to identify, edit, and understand your search terms.
A lot of work goes into making Invoca’s search bar intuitive and easy to use, but it still helps to know some details of how it works.
Boxed search phrases
The search bar shows boxes around each search phrase, so you can easily see where it begins and ends. Your phrases appear as plain text while typing, but become boxed once you click out of the search bar. Measures are green, attributes are blue, and filters are gray.
NoteIf any column names or values contain leading or trailing whitespace, add a delimiter for the search bar to accept them. For example, a column named ” Sales ” (with spaces before and after) must be entered as ' Sales ', with single quotes — otherwise Invoca strips the extra spaces and won’t recognize the column name.
Search on enter
Invoca’s default search experience is search on enter — add or remove tokens in the search bar without altering your existing search until you press Enter, or select Go.
Editing a search
Click a search phrase to highlight it and see other suggestions you can choose to replace it. Hover over a boxed phrase to see an x, which removes it from the search. You can insert a new phrase in the middle of a search by clicking between phrases, and even merge phrases without breaking the search. Invoca continuously regenerates results as you edit.
If a table or chart doesn’t seem to contain all the data you expect, look for filters in gray boxes in the search bar — remove them to see all available data.
Quick select search results
As you type, the first suggestion is automatically highlighted, and you can use Tab to navigate further. After typing a phrase or letter and pressing Enter, the highlighted suggestion is automatically selected. Suggestions can be an attribute, Measure, value, keyword, historic query, or exactly what you typed.
Spell check
The search bar includes spell check — if you spell or type a term incorrectly, your suggestions include the correct spelling. It also performs a metaphone check for similar-sounding words on text data values.
Dictionary synonyms
A dictionary of common word synonyms is bundled with Invoca, using the WordNet library, which weights words by similarity and accounts for word proximity. For example, typing “gross” (if not found) is treated as a synonym for “revenue” — freeing you from needing to know the exact term or column name used in a data source.
