Create Events and Custom Dimensions in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), obtain your Measurement ID and API Secret, and configure the integration in Invoca.
Invoca for GA4 uses the GA4 Measurement Protocol to give you a complete view of the inbound call activity driven by your marketing efforts. With this integration, you can report Invoca phone calls and Signals to GA4 as custom Events, understand which campaigns and pages are driving each type of call by capturing the Google Analytics session ID, and use Invoca data to build GA4 audiences for use in Google Ads. Before you begin: you need a GA4 property with a Web data stream, and Editor access to that property if you plan to create Custom Dimensions.

Step 1: Create Events in GA4

  1. From the Data Stream overview panel, select Create Custom Events, then click Create.
  2. Enter a name for the Event, using only letters, digits, and underscores (no spaces). This is only possible for web events, not call events.
  3. Enter the matching conditions: parameter event_name, operator equals, and the value you entered as the custom event name above. You don’t need to match the Signal name as it exists in Invoca — you’ll enter this event name manually when reporting from Invoca, so naming is flexible on the GA4 side as long as it follows Google’s naming rules.
  4. Save, and repeat for each event Invoca will report.

Step 2: Create Custom Dimensions in GA4 (optional)

To pass additional Invoca data alongside an Event — like product information or other Marketing Data — use Custom Dimensions. You need the Editor role in GA4 to create them.
  1. Click the gear icon for Admin settings, then Custom definitions under the GA4 Property, then create a new custom dimension.
  2. Enter a descriptive name (for example, “Product in Cart_Invoca”).
  3. Choose the scope — Event is recommended if the data relates to the call or Signal rather than the caller; choose User if the value relates to the caller and doesn’t change by session.
  4. Optionally enter a description.
  5. Enter the Event parameter — this is the name you’ll enter as the custom parameter when setting up the integration in Invoca.
  6. Save, and repeat for each custom dimension you want reported.
Custom Metrics work the same way, for quantifiable values like call duration rather than text.

Step 3: Obtain your GA4 Measurement ID and API Secret

  1. In Google Analytics, click the gear icon for Admin settings.
  2. For the GA4 Property to integrate, click Data Streams. Create a Web stream if you don’t have one.
  3. Open the stream’s details and copy the Measurement ID at the top of the panel.
  4. Scroll to Measurement Protocol API secrets and copy an existing Secret value, or create a new one.
  5. Repeat this for each GA4 Property you’ll integrate.

Step 4: Set up the integration in Invoca

  1. In the sidebar, click Integrations, then Manage Integrations.
  2. Click the Google Analytics 4 tile.
  3. Enter a friendly name for this Property, and enter the Measurement ID and API Secret from Step 3.
  4. Create an Action — a Call or specific Signal to report:
    1. Enter a friendly name, including “Call” or the Signal name to distinguish Actions.
    2. Optionally filter by Profile (Network-level Actions) or Campaign (Profile-level Actions).
    3. Under Triggered By, choose All Calls or Signal (then select the specific Signal). Create separate Actions for more than one transaction type.
    4. Enter the Google Analytics Event Name exactly as you set it up in Step 1 — this is how Google ties the call or Signal to the Event.
    5. Check Include events from “static” and “overflow” numbers only if you want to report calls without a Google Analytics Client ID (the anonymous visitor ID) — these won’t tie to any session or visitor information.
    6. Optionally enter a 3-letter currency code if your Property doesn’t use USD.
  5. Click Save. Repeat the Action setup for each transaction type you want reported.

Verify your GA4 integration

Check your Marketing Data dictionary for three fields that confirm setup: ga_session_id, ga_measurement_id, and g_cid. Since the GA4 Measurement Protocol always returns a 204 success code to Invoca, it’s more useful to check GA4 itself. Data appears at different speeds in different reports — the Realtime report is best right after setup: you should see your Event appear in the Event count by Event name panel, and can drill into its parameters. If data isn’t showing up in Realtime, confirm:
  • The event name in GA4 matches the “Google Analytics Event Name” entered in the Invoca Action.
  • Each Custom Parameter in your Invoca Action has a corresponding Custom Dimension in GA4, using the same Event parameter/User Property value.
  • Your Measurement ID and API Secret are both correct.
Other reports take longer — Life Cycle reports typically populate within 8 hours, with Explorer reports taking a bit more time. To confirm data was attributed correctly, check the Engagement > Events report and add dimensions as needed.
