Register an RCS agent, plan for carrier review, and connect it to your AI Messaging Agent so customers see a verified, branded sender.

Overview

RCS (Rich Communication Services) lets your Invoca AI Messaging Agent reach customers in their phone’s default messaging app. Customers see a verified, branded identity instead of an anonymous number. This article covers what you need to register an RCS agent, the registration and launch timeline, how to connect the agent in Invoca, and current limitations. Your Invoca Customer Success Manager (CSM) can help you at every step of this process.

Benefits of RCS

  • Customers see your brand name, logo, “Verified by Google,” and brand contact information on every conversation.
  • RCS supports app-like experiences such as images, suggested replies that customers tap, and interactive cards. Customers don’t need to download an app.
  • Your RCS agent works with the same AI Messaging Agent you use for SMS. It can respond to lead form submissions, inbound texts, and IVR (interactive voice response) opt-ins.
  • Customers can start a conversation from a website link or a QR code. After Google registration is complete, they can also start one from a Google Message Ad.

Before you begin

Request an RCS registration form from your CSM. Mobile carriers review every RCS agent, so complete and accurate information is the biggest factor in how fast you go live. You also need a verified SMS number in Invoca. Phones that don’t support RCS receive SMS from this fallback number. If you don’t have one yet, Invoca can register a toll-free SMS number and your RCS agent at the same time using a single combined form.

Business information for RCS registration

  • Legal company name, website, and business address
  • Business registration type and number, such as an EIN (Employer Identification Number)
  • Business contact name, phone number, and email
  • Privacy policy URL. The policy must state what data you collect and that mobile opt-in information won’t be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing.
  • Terms and conditions URL. The terms must cover your program description, “message and data rates may apply,” message frequency, support contact information, HELP and STOP instructions, and a link to your privacy policy.

RCS agent profile details

  • Display name: Up to 40 characters, reflecting one specific purpose. For example, use “Acme Scheduling” rather than “Acme.”
  • Description: Up to 100 characters, stating what customers can do with the agent.
  • Brand color: A hex code with at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio against white.
  • Customer-facing contact details: A phone number, an email address, and a website label, such as “Visit Us.”
  • Logo: 224 x 224 pixels, JPG or PNG, under 50 KB. The logo is cropped to a circle, so keep key artwork centered.
  • Banner: 1440 x 448 pixels, JPG or PNG, under 200 KB. The logo partly covers the banner, so leave room for it.
  • Test phone numbers (optional): Numbers that can message the agent before launch.
Carriers reject applications whose description contains vague marketing taglines.
Your agent’s name, description, color, and images are locked once you submit them. Any change, even a new color, requires a full resubmission and a new carrier review. Get final sign-off on branding before you submit.

RCS registration and launch timeline

Plan for roughly five to seven weeks from submission to full launch. Most of this time is carrier review, which no provider can shorten.
  1. Submit your registration. Return the completed registration form and image files to your CSM.
  2. Pre-launch (about 1 week). Invoca submits your agent to its messaging partner, which creates the agent in a test state. The agent is fully functional, but it can only message a short list of allowlisted test phone numbers. Use this time to review your branding on real devices and fine-tune your AI Messaging Agent.
  3. Commercial launch (2 to 6 weeks). Invoca submits the agent for commercial launch. Each carrier, such as AT&T and Verizon, reviews it separately. After approval, your agent can message any RCS-capable consumer.
  4. Google registration (2 to 3 days). Invoca completes a Google registration that unlocks Google entry points, such as Message Ads and messaging from search results.

Connect your RCS agent to a promo number in Invoca

After your agent reaches pre-launch, connect it to your SMS-enabled number.
  1. Go to Promo Numbers in Invoca.
  2. Click the actions menu (•••) next to your SMS-enabled number, then click Configure RCS Agent.
  3. Enter the Agent ID and Sender ID your CSM provided.
  4. Click Save.
You can currently connect each RCS agent to one number in Invoca.

RCS limitations

  • RCS agents don’t have a phone number that customers can call or text. Conversations begin with a link, a QR code, a Google Message Ad, or a message your agent sends first.
  • Customers whose phones don’t support RCS automatically receive SMS from your fallback number.
  • An approved agent is tied to the messaging provider that registered it and can’t be transferred. If you switch providers, you need to register a new agent.
  • Google doesn’t pass ad click identifiers, such as GCLID (Google Click Identifier), through RCS conversations. As a result, attribution for Message Ads works differently than for calls and web forms. Talk with your CSM about how to track these conversations for your campaigns.
