# RingPool Auto-Scaling

> Auto-scaling automatically adds or removes phone numbers in your RingPools based on real-time traffic, keeping attribution accurate without wasting numbers.

RingPool auto-scaling manages the number of phone numbers within your RingPools, keeping performance optimal as traffic changes. This article covers the benefits of auto-scaling, how to configure it, and how to monitor its effectiveness.

Auto-scaling intelligently adds or removes phone numbers based on real-time traffic, optimizing resource allocation as visitor activity fluctuates. It aims to balance maintaining visitor attribution against avoiding unnecessary number consumption — you can customize the settings to match your priorities.

## Configuring auto-scaling

### Setting percentage and limits

Define the percentage growth for auto-scaling and set upper limits to prevent sudden traffic spikes from overwhelming your RingPools, avoiding unnecessary depletion of phone numbers.

For example, if you have a RingPool with 1,000 numbers and a 20% growth setting, and 5,000 visitors land on your page at once, you can set a max limit of 50 to control how fast the pool grows, rather than adding 200 numbers every 5 minutes until it catches up.

### Mitigating overages

Control the growth speed to avoid overages while still providing attribution for a significant share of visitors. Auto-scaling's customizable settings let you find the balance that fits your priorities.

## Types of numbers in a RingPool

Numbers within RingPools come in three forms:

1. **Pooling:** numbers added as the pool scales upward based on visitor traffic.
2. **Overflow:** presented once available numbers are exhausted, providing session-level attribution.
3. **Preallocated** (10% of max pool size for PNAPI RingPools): filled in when a RingPool is first set up.

## RingPool auto-scaling configuration

* You can configure a RingPool to auto-scale up or down from the same UI.
* The "Apply Auto-scaling Logic" checkbox is the main control switch for turning auto-scaling on or off.
* Auto-scaling logic can apply to all PNAPI-enabled campaigns, specific campaigns, or future campaigns by default.

### How auto-scaling up works

* Auto-scaling checks each RingPool every 5 minutes, adjusting its size based on real-time traffic.
* The Growth Factor % determines what percentage of the Max Pool Size the RingPool can grow within a 5-minute period, with configurable minimum and maximum limits.
* Local Number RingPools dynamically request numbers from carriers to avoid running out of local numbers.

### How auto-scaling down works

* Each night, auto-scaling marks the least recently called numbers in an eligible RingPool as "Reserved" — held as standby attribution capacity rather than removed outright. A RingPool is only eligible for this if it hasn't presented an overflow number in the past 30 days.
* On the last day of the month, auto-scaling finalizes scale-down: any Reserved number that still qualifies as unused is removed from the RingPool, capped at 20% of the RingPool's numbers per month. A Reserved number that gets called back into active service before then returns to Pooling status instead of being removed. ### Advanced auto-scaling settings

Super Users and Managers can access the Auto-Scaling details page for more granular control over RingPool scaling properties. Access to this page must be granted by Invoca — reach out to your Invoca Customer Success Manager.

From there, you can toggle auto-scaling on or off, configure auto-scaling-down settings, and apply settings to individual or specific campaigns.
