# Configure Columns for the X and Y Axes

> Drag and drop Measures and attributes onto the correct axis, or use slice with color to break data into subcategories.

You can specify which fields show on the x-axis and y-axis of a chart. When you first run a search, some Measures or attributes may not be visualized. Add them to a chart's axes by dragging these columns from the **not visualized** section in the **chart configuration** panel onto the correct axis.

You can only add attributes to the x-axis, and Measures to the y-axis. If a column can't go on a specific axis, the option to drop it there won't appear. Attributes appear blue in the search bar and **Customize** menu; Measures appear green.

  The x- and y-axes on a bar chart work differently than on other charts: attributes are on the y-axis, and Measures are on the x-axis.

## Removing columns from the visualization

Drag an attribute or Measure to the **not visualized** section to remove it from the visualization without removing it from your search — either by dragging and dropping, or by clicking the **x** that appears when you hover over it in the **Customize** menu. You can use this to perform a hidden sort by moving a Measure column to **Not Visualized**; you can't perform hidden sorts using attributes.

## Slice with color

Drag an attribute into the **slice with color** section, which appears for chart types like column or bar charts when your search has more than one attribute. Only an attribute can be used to slice with color. This separates data already sorted by one attribute into color-coded subcategories based on another attribute.

## Slice

Drag an attribute into the **slice** section, which only appears for [scatter](/s/article/scatter-charts) and [bubble charts](/s/article/bubble-charts). This breaks up data based on an additional column. Scatter and bubble charts support both **slice** and **slice with color** at the same time.

## Steps

1. Click the **chart configuration** icon.
2. Drag and drop a Measure or attribute from **not visualized** to the correct axis, or the reverse — or drag an attribute to **slice with color** or **slice**.

In some cases, y-axis labels appear on either side of the chart (left and right) instead of stacked together, depending on the analysis.
