# Capturing a Marketing Data Field From the Adobe Client Data Layer

> Configure the Invoca Tag to read a value from the Adobe Client Data Layer and save it to a Marketing Data Field.

**Configure the Invoca Tag to read a value from the Adobe Client Data Layer and save it to a Marketing Data Field, for teams whose websites already use Adobe Experience.**

## Before you begin

* Your website already uses Adobe Experience with the Adobe Client Data Layer. For background, see the [Adobe Client Data Layer overview](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/docs/experience-manager-learn/sites/integrations/adobe-client-data-layer/data-layer-overview.html?lang=en).
* You can open the page where Adobe Experience is active and use your browser's developer tools.

## Step 1: Find the value in the Adobe Client Data Layer

1. Open the URL where Adobe Experience is active.
2. Open your browser's developer tools and run the following command in the **Console**: `window.adobeDataLayer.getState();`. The output shows information about the page and its components.
3. Identify the component you want to capture, then change the command to `adobeDataLayer.getState('thingToCapture')`. Replace `thingToCapture` with the component you want to capture.
4. Confirm that the output matches the value you want to capture.

## Step 2: Create a Marketing Data Field in Invoca

1. In Invoca, go to **Settings** > **Marketing Data**.
2. Click **+ New Data Field** to create the field in your Marketing Data Dictionary.

## Step 3: Set the field to read from the data layer

1. Go to **Settings** > **Invoca Tag**, select the latest revision, then click **New Draft**.
2. Next to your new Marketing Data Field, set **Data Source Type** to **JavaScript Data Layer**.
3. In the **Data Source Name** field, enter the command you confirmed in Step 1.
4. Click **Save & Go Live**.
