# Apply Conditional Formatting

> Use conditional formatting to highlight values above, below, or within a threshold in a table or chart.

You can apply conditional formatting to tables or charts to highlight values in the data — making values above, below, or within a particular threshold stand out.

## Understand conditional formatting

Many companies build Dashboards with key metrics they track in daily or weekly staff meetings. Conditional formatting lets them see at a glance how they're performing relative to those metrics, using visual cues — color formatting applied to the search result — for KPIs or threshold metrics. For tables, conditional formatting sets a cell's background color based on the value it contains. For charts, it shows the threshold(s) you defined, with the data that falls within them shown in the same color.

## Apply conditional formatting to a table

1. In the column header of the column you want to format, click the **More** menu icon.
2. Select **Conditional Formatting**.
3. Click **+ ADD FORMATTING** in the **Conditional Formatting** window.
4. Define the sets of values and the color to use for each set.
5. Click **Done** after defining all your conditional formatting sets.

  If you change to a chart type, you must reapply conditional formatting — it's tied to the specific visualization.

## Apply conditional formatting to a chart

1. Click the axis label of your chart. Select **Conditional Formatting**.
2. Click **+ ADD FORMATTING** in the Conditional Formatting window.
3. Define the ranges of values and the color to use for each range you want to track. Click **+** to add another range and repeat.
4. Click **Done** after defining all your conditional formatting ranges.

  If you change the chart type, you must reapply conditional formatting — it's tied to the specific visualization.

## Limitations

The following chart types do **not** support conditional formatting: Funnel, Geo area, Geo bubble, Geo heatmap, Heatmap, Pie, Radar, Sankey, Treemap.
