# Advanced Redaction

> Advanced Redaction is a paid, closed-beta feature that lets you choose additional PII and PHI entity types to remove from transcripts, beyond the fixed set covered by Standard Redaction.

**Advanced Redaction is a paid feature, currently in closed beta.** Reach out to your account team or [support@invoca.com](mailto:support@invoca.com) if you're interested in adding it to your current package.

Advanced Redaction automatically removes sensitive information from call transcripts and recordings, so you can keep using Invoca's full analytics and AI capabilities without exposing personal data.

It builds on Standard Redaction, which is included with every Invoca account and always on. Together, the two give you a layered approach to protecting customer privacy in your call data — see [Transcription Redaction Overview](/s/article/jhdcp92865-8699) for details on Standard Redaction.

## Standard vs. Advanced Redaction

Standard Redaction is included with every Invoca account at no additional cost. It runs automatically on every call and covers a fixed set of fields: credit card numbers, CVV, bank account numbers, routing numbers, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver's license numbers, and date of birth. Standard Redaction is always on and can't be turned off.

Advanced Redaction extends this baseline. Instead of a fixed list, you choose which additional entity types to redact based on what matters most to your team — compliance, legal, or AI governance. All Advanced Redaction entities are optional and off by default; you only enable what you need.

## Why it matters

Call data is one of the richest signals you have, and one of the most sensitive. Advanced Redaction lets you:

* Protect customer privacy across every call without slowing down operations.
* Support your compliance posture across frameworks like HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, and CCPA.
* Safely use Invoca AI, transcripts, and analytics knowing sensitive data is masked.
* Reduce risk when sharing call data with partners, agencies, or internal teams.
* Maintain analytical value, since structure and context remain intact even when sensitive data is removed.

## How it works

Once Advanced Redaction is enabled on your network and you've selected your entities, every call processed by Invoca runs through the redaction pipeline automatically:

1. Audio is transcribed.
2. The redaction model scans the transcript for the entity types you selected, plus the always-on entities covered by Standard Redaction.
3. Detected entities are replaced with stars (`***`) in the transcript.
4. The redacted transcript is what appears across Invoca, including in AI features, Signal detection, and exports.

Because redaction is applied to the transcript layer, anything that reads from transcripts inherits the redaction automatically.

Redaction only applies to calls going forward from when the feature is enabled — past calls aren't retroactively redacted.

## Supported entity types

Advanced Redaction covers two categories of entities, and you can enable any combination across both.

Entity coverage will continue to grow. The entities above have the strongest track record from testing so far. If you need an entity type that isn't listed, reach out to your account team to learn what's on the roadmap.

## Where it applies

Advanced Redaction applies to call transcriptions and is set at the network level. Whatever entities you select apply across all calls on your network, so pick a set that works for the full range of your call types, not just one segment.

## Language support

Advanced Redaction currently supports English, French, and Spanish. Account Number is English only for now, with multilingual support in progress.

## Configuring your Advanced Redaction

1. Log in to the Invoca platform.
2. Go to **Settings**, then **Redaction**.
3. Browse the Advanced Redaction entity list and select the entities that fit your needs — select all, or go one by one.
4. Click **Save**.

Once saved, the entities you selected start being applied to transcripts and recordings going forward. If you don't see the Advanced Redaction option in your settings, contact your account team to have it enabled for your network.

## User experience

When Invoca redacts an entity, it replaces the sensitive text at the point where it appears in the transcript. There are two display formats.

By default, a redacted entity appears as stars (`***`). Another option for Advanced Redaction users is to display by entity name — instead of stars, redacted entities appear as labels that name the type of information removed, such as `[NAME]`, `[PHONE]`, or `[EMAIL]`. Labels keep the transcript readable and give reviewers, AI features, and QM (quality management) evaluations more context about what was redacted, without ever exposing the underlying value.

When labels are enabled, they apply across your transcripts, including past and future calls. For older calls where the entity type isn't available, the label appears as `[UNKNOWN]` or `[REDACTED]`. If labels are later turned off, redacted content returns to stars.

Here's how the two formats compare. A call snippet might read like this before redaction:

"Hi, this is Sarah Chen calling from Mercy General. My account number is 4829301, and I am calling about my prescription for Lisinopril."

With stars:

"Hi, this is `***` calling from `***`. My account number is `***`, and I am calling about my prescription for `***`."

With entity type labels:

"Hi, this is `[NAME]` calling from `[ORGANIZATION]`. My account number is `[ACCOUNT_NUMBER]`, and I am calling about my prescription for `[DRUG]`."

In both formats, the structure of the conversation is preserved, so Signals, AI summaries, and analytics still work as expected. The underlying sensitive content is never exposed or logged, regardless of which format you use.

## Best practices

* Enable the entity types that match your compliance and privacy requirements, not all of them by default — over-redacting can reduce the value of transcripts for analysis.
* Review your first batch of redacted calls after enabling, to confirm the configuration matches your expectations.
* Pair Advanced Redaction with your existing privacy and access controls inside Invoca for layered protection.
* Let your account team know if you see patterns that should be redacted but aren't.

## FAQs

**Does redaction affect Invoca AI features?** No. AI features run on the redacted transcript, and the redaction stars preserve enough structure for summaries, Signals, and other AI outputs to remain useful.

**What happens to calls processed before I enabled redaction?** Advanced Redaction applies going forward from when it's enabled. Historical calls aren't retroactively redacted.

**Does Standard Redaction still apply if I turn on Advanced Redaction?** Yes. Standard Redaction is always on for every account and can't be turned off. Advanced Redaction adds to that baseline — it doesn't replace it.

**Can I configure Advanced Redaction differently for different parts of my network?** No. Advanced Redaction is set at the network level, so your selected entities apply across all calls on your network. Choose a set that works for the full range of your call types.
